Automotive: CMW has two materials to help in your die casting operations to reduce your die tooling lifecycle costs via better quality, less scrap, longer die life, and more.
Thermal Fatigue is the #1 reason of tool end of life. Higher tensile strength and better thermal conductivity goes a long way to minimize thermal fatigue and thereby improve tool life. Anviloy® 1150 has a higher tensile strength at elevated temperatures than tool steel and has 5 times better thermal conductivity than tool steel. You can enjoy up to 10 times the die life with Anviloy® 1150.
Anviloy® 1150 should be considered a complimentary product to Tool Steel, not necessarily a replacement. Tool steel does a good job in many die casting applications, but its life decreases as casting temperatures increase. Anviloy® 1150 is perfect for these high temperature applications. It's typically used for core pins and rods which create the thru-holes, cavities, and indentations inside the castings.
Use Anviloy® Weld Rod for welding Anviloy® 1150 to other die materials, repairing cracked dies, and building up die erosion areas, thus extending the life of your investment.
Aerospace: Quality, dependability, high performance materials and precision machined products are critical for the aerospace industry. Tungsten heavy alloys from CMW are used for weights and counter-balances throughout the world.
We not only manufacture the tungsten alloys but we also have the experience and expertise to machine them to your specifications.
Military & Defense: CMW is a direct supplier to the Federal Government, Prime Defense Contractors, Machine Shops and Resellers. We provide both raw material and finish-machined parts. Applications include ballasts, weights and counterbalances, rotating inertia members (gyroscopes), guidance components (vector control vanes), high-reliability heat sinks
Our customers include the US Department of Defense, US Department of Energy, BAE, Atlantic Inertial Systems, CRANE, Army, Navy, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and many more.
Nuclear: CMW supplies material and application expertise to many national laboratories and universities around the world engaged in nuclear research and development.
Please review our brochure that contains the typical properties for our materials.
Medical Radiation Shielding: Tungsten began replacing lead in medical radiation shielding applications about 20 years ago. With a density in the range of 18g/cm³, tungsten alloy shielding takes up roughly two-thirds as much space as lead shielding, and poses no environmental threat.
CMW supplies raw material and finish-machined parts to the medical industry for radiation shielding. Applications include shielding and collimators (which focus X-rays) used in therapeutic high-energy X-ray treatments for cancer, syringe shields, storage containers, and other devices. Click here to read more about the applications that use radiation shielding.
Industrial Radiation Shielding: Lead has long been used for storing and transporting radioactive material, but it creates environmental hazards. Further, relatively large amounts of lead are required for effective shielding. Tungsten-based alloys, on the other hand, are the perfect solution: they are environmentally friendly, and they are 50% more dense than lead, providing more effective shielding with less material.
Some common applications include:
- Isotope Storage Containers
- Collimators
- Positron Emission Tomography Equipment
- Beam Stops
- Localized Shielding
- Gamma Cameras
- Source Containers
CMW® 1000 is the most common material for these applications.
Oil & Gas Exploration: Tungsten began replacing lead in oil well radiation shielding applications about 20 years ago. With a density in the range of 18g/cm³, tungsten alloy shielding takes up roughly two-thirds as much space as lead shielding, and poses no environmental threat.
Performance Racing: In confined spaces where mass is required for balance, CMW tungsten-based materials are often specified. Race cars can be given just the right "feel" or balance to maximize performance. CMW's tungsten-based chassis weights are more than twice the density of steel and 50% heavier than lead.
CMW Chassis Race Weights will:
- Lower your center of gravity
- Adjust balance between front & rear
- Machined to fit easily into Chassis Frame Rail
- Threaded holes on both ends for easy movement
- Standard Block is 2 5/8" x 3 5/8" x 6" and weighs 35 lbs
- Other sizes available
Recreation: Tungsten-based weights are used to get just the right feel with golf clubs and tennis rackets.
Precision Machining Tools: Customer demands are critical: your reputation is forged by the quality of your product. CMW developed No-Chat® and No-Chat® Max line of products to offer rigidity and minimize vibration /chatter associated with boring bars, grinding quills, and other precision machine tools. They last longer than tool steel and will allow you to precisely meet your quality and finish specifications. They may also be used in place of tungsten carbide for boring bars.
Electronics: CMW created Thermkon® Copper-Tungsten and Thermkon® Copper-Molybdenum to help meet the demands of today's high-performance, high-reliability electronics.
Heat is the major cause of microsystem failure. Thermkon® solves that problem by dissipating heat from the chip at rates up to 110 BTU/h/ft/F° or 190 w/m/K. The degree of dissipation you require will help determine which of the Thermkon® composite materials should be used for your application.
Thermkon® also features a low coefficient of thermal expansion which eliminates the problem of chip failure due to thermal cycling stress. The coefficient of thermal expansion can be tailored to match the chip or ceramic's thermal expansion.
Thermkon® heat sink materials can be fabricated in sizes, thicknesses, and shapes to meet the needs of virtually any application. Surfaces are ground to assure flatness within .001 inch per inch of the longest dimension. CMW takes every care to produce only the highest quality heat sinks.
Thermkon® is ideal for applications such as:
- Discrete flanges for NPN silicon bipolar power transistors
- GaAs FET carriers
- Flat Pack bases to match thermal and coefficient requirements of thick and thin film circuitry.
- Machined housings for amplifiers and mixers
Thermkon® is also ideally suited to a wide range of other applications. Please consult the Thermkon® Brochure to learn more — or contact us directly at metals@cmwinc.com.
