High Density Metals Industries
Medical Radiation Shielding: Tungsten, a high density metal, began replacing lead in medical radiation shielding applications about 20 years ago. With a density in the range of 18g/cm³, tungsten alloy shielding takes up roughly two-thirds as much space as lead shielding, and poses no environmental threat.
CMW supplies raw material and finish-machined parts to the medical industry for radiation shielding. Applications include shielding and collimators (which focus X-rays) used in therapeutic high-energy X-ray treatments for cancer, syringe shields, storage containers, and other devices. Industrial Radiation Shielding: Lead has long been used for storing and transporting radioactive material, but it creates environmental hazards. Further, relatively large amounts of lead are required for effective shielding. Tungsten-based alloys, on the other hand, are the perfect solution: they are environmentally friendly, and they are 50% more dense than lead, providing more effective shielding with less material.
Some common applications include:
- Isotope Storage Containers
- Collimators
- Positron Emission Tomography Equipment
- Beam Stops
- Localized Shielding
- Gamma Cameras
- Source Containers
CMW® 1000 is the most common material for these applications.
